Young people in Torbay are benefitting from motivational sessions with a two-times Team GB Paralympian, thanks to a National Lottery funded project.
Swimming and Triathlon Paralympian Dave Hill will be using his experience as Team GB's youngest athlete at the Athens 2004 games to inspire the residents of housing provider Liverty’s Torbay Foyer.
The sessions, which are part of the ‘Get On Track’ programme run by the Kelly Holmes Trust, will provide integrated mentoring and support to young people looking for work, training or volunteering. Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, Westward Pathfinder and Liverty have facilitated the scheme as part of the building Better Opportunities project, funded by the European Social Fund and the Big Lottery Fund to tackle poverty and drive local jobs growth.
Get On Track forms part of our Community Impact Week celebrations, which runs from 6 to12 November to celebrate individuals and communities who are active in making their community a great place to live. We’re proud to be involved, helping our customers to do something amazing, providing support and funding where it’s needed or just getting out there and volunteering.
Dave Hill, who is also a World and European Medalist, and British Champion, said: “I’m really excited to utilise my sporting experiences and partner with Westward Pathfinder and Liverty to provide local young people with the opportunity to build upon their individual strengths and make them all-round more employable. I really hope they can see the direct correlation between the skills I needed to be successful in achieving my dreams and the key attributes they will develop in order to reach their goals.”
Foyers offer accommodation and personal development for young people, usually aged 16 to 25, in housing need to live, learn and make the transition to independent adulthood.
Ross Hamilton, Housing Support Service Manager at Torbay Foyer said: “This is a chance for our young people to experience an inspirational programme led by world class athletes. Torbay Foyer is all about providing young people with the opportunity to grow and thrive.”
